Peter played rugby for Hatfield RFC and then following a move further south played for Midhurst RFC. His favoured position was in the back row but often ended up in the engine room at second row and being tall and lanky was often thrown into the air in the lineout !
Peter gave up rugby to take up and equally dangerous sport that required being thrown into the air!...eventing (thats Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country !). He competed his horse Benson at 1 and 3 day events, falling off regularly and usually at the fence his wife was spectating by. An injury to his horse towards the end of 2008 meant a bit of a re-think as far as sporting pass times was concerned. This coupled with a growing waistline lead to perhaps the most foolish decision of his life..."I'm going to run the London Marathon !"
The first run round the 2 mile block nearly killed him (and his dog !) but eventually he really got into it. He completed the Great South Run as part of his training and in April 2009 made it round the marathon in 3 hours 57 minutes. In the process he raised over £2000 for the Royal National Institute for Blind People and beat all the objectives he had set himself.
The problem with running is it does not go very well with horse riding which led to lots of visits to the sports injuries therapist for groin and hip problems. Once you have undertaken such a large personal challenge as running a marathon you find yourself looking for the next challege.
Over a beer with best mate Darren Barsby, Peter was introduced to R2R and it lit a fire ! Within a month he had bought a road bike (Giant Defy 2) and was hooked.
The first challenge was to ride the Avon Cycleway with Darren and Giles. There's the Verenti Dragon Ride, Swindon Sportive and then the big one...the last 4 stages of the Tour de Force !
